The toll it took: Bloomington police officers cradle the dying, rush toward gunfire and miss holidays with their kids. Over 18 months, they fought for better hours and pay. | Indiana Daily Student, December 2019

Second place in Best Student Print/Digital Feature Story (2020 Best in Indiana Journalism Awards, Indiana Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists). Third place in Best Feature Story (2020, Indiana Collegiate Press Association).

I reported this story for three months, speaking with the Post family, other Bloomington police officers and city officials and researching national trends. I also obtained call logs from the police department to find out how many times officers responded to an incident involving a weapon, and I used police scanner traffic from the night of a shooting to capture the chaos of the job. Though my stance on reporting on law enforcement has changed since this story published, I think it's representative of the kind of narrative reporting I can do.

She didn't know, and the rest is in the story.
