I reported this story for three months, speaking with the Post family, other Bloomington police officers and city officials and researching national trends. I also obtained call logs from the police department to find out how many times officers responded to an incident involving a weapon, and I used police scanner traffic from the night of a shooting to capture the chaos of the job. Though my stance on reporting on law enforcement has changed since this story published, I think it's representative of the kind of narrative reporting I can do.

I got the assignment to do a story on student nightlife. Having just turned 21, I was new to ordering drinks at the bars. I noticed so many student-age people sipping a bright blue drink, and I asked my friend — who I'd dragged to the bar to hype me up if I got nervous reporting — what was in the drink. She didn't know, and the rest is in the story.
